I'm driving down to Tuscany for a family holiday in August. I'm looking for some advice on good places to stop along the way and on the way back.
I've got three days to get down there and nearly a week to get back again, so there's plenty of time to take in some sights and rides along the way. There are so many great options it would be great to get some recommendations from anyone whose done the trip before.
Thanks in advance James

James, the french inside me is telling me that you should defo do a pit stop after Beaune (A6)!!
You will be bang in the middle of one of the finest part of burgundy: plenty opportunities to cycle in beautiful vineyards, chateaux and so many caves to refuel --> Pommard, Chassagne Montrachet, Santenay, Mercurey, Givry .... only to mention few :-P
That said you better stop after in the Alpes to burn the many calories taken on board!!

Esther Drabkin-Reiter that would be great. We'll be visiting Florence for a few days but most of our time will be spent around the Grosseto province. Know any routes around there?

Unfortunately not, that was a bit far south for me. I would say you should visit Saturnia but not sure whether hot springs are so attractive in the Italian summer! I would definitely recommend visiting Orbetello though - amazing fish restaurants and lovely beaches. I'll gather my thoughts on rides around Florence and PM you later.

Not sure on routes but which ever route you take if it goes through the tunnels through the alps get to the tunnels early I. E. Pre 9am. I rocked up at 10am and had a 17km tail back that took 2 to 3 hours to get past.

My family has been going to Tuscany for camping holidays for pretty much ever - never done any real cycling down there though. However, what I can say is that although the Italians do go to Tuscany for their holidays they pretty much all go to the seaside and think the Brits bonkers for going to the hills. It gets reallyreallyreallyreally stupidly hot up in the hills and why would you swelter there when the sea is lovely... We've tended to stay a bit further north than where you're going (sort of just around Cecina) but I'm guessing it's not that different.
