Popped over the road to take a look at the BMX track yesterday evening and was told that there are free sessions for women for the next couple of weeks if you would like to go and have a go. They start at 6.30 on Tuesdays I believe but probably best to call to check. www.peckhambmx.co.uk/track-info/B

I just booked a space for tonight's session (call 020 7708 5464) - they're run by London BMX Track not Peckham BMX. Will report back.

I did this last Tuesday and it was brilliant - heading back again with lydiadrabkinreiter this coming week. It was pretty well attended with six ladies in the beginners group and around 15 in the experienced group. The coaches were friendly and great teachers - first we practised bike handling skills and cornering off the track and then moved onto the track, gradually building up from doing one jump to half laps and then a full lap of the track. I loved trying out a new cycling discipline in a safe and supportive environment, and was really pleased with how quickly I picked it up. The sessions are part of the BMXercise initiative - women's only BMX sessions which run all across London, more details on the Facebook page here: www.facebook.com/BMXerciseLondonbmxuk/?fref=tsNo need to book - but if you want to, you can by calling the number in my post above. Helmet, bike and gloves are all provided, you just need to turn up wearing long sleeves and trousers. It will be free for the next few weeks, after that the sessions continue but cost around £5/session. Although the coaches will teach complete beginners, some of the ladies in the more experienced group had clearly been riding BMX for quite a while and were still able to gain something from the session. Would be lovely to see some paragonettes there in the next weeks!

I second all of Esther's comments about the BMX sessions - they're huge fun, and very different from riding on the road (hardly any pedalling, and more upper body work - so good cross-training!) Though bike-handling skills transfer, so you definitely have an edge over complete beginners. Last free week next week - come along!

I'm finally going to be able to get along to this on Tuesday with some (non club) mates. If anyone is feeling apprehensive about going on their own, drop me a line and come with us!

How was it? Fun enough to come along again this week? (: (I think Esther Drabkin-Reiter and I will try to...)
