Hi
I'm keen to join the off Road fun for the winter but at present need to offload a winter road bike to allow that one in one out rule to be followed.....
Once done I think I'll have a budget of around £1000-1500 max for a cross bike. I'm getting a bit swamped with trying to decide between something like a boardman CX team (which has a 1x SRAM set up), a Ridley X bow with 105 or go for one of Canyons AL offerings.
I'm after the holy grail of something reasonably priced with decent spec and wheels that are not completely crap; with the knowledge that the lure of tubs is not far away...... Any advice from you seasoned Xers? Thanks for any advice in advance
Cheers!

what size are you after? I've got an unused Carbon X bike with the Full hydraulic SRAM 1x and tubeless ready wheels available at £950

Hi Paul, they're all good choices and any of these bikes will more than cope. I'd also considered looking at bikes such as the new Trek Crockett, Planet X XLS or Giant TCX. If you're keen on the Ridley, have a look at Paul Milnes who sell rebranded Ridleys – same frames from the same factory, just lower price-tag! You don't need to go for top-end kit for cross – it gets dirty, bashed about and generally subjected to more mud and grim in a season than a road bike might see in a lifetime!
In terms of drivetrain, having raced with Shimano, Sram and even Campag (trust me, it doesn't like mud!) I've found a Sram 1x setup to be the best option at coping with everything. If you do go for a 1x, make sure the rear mech has a clutch to keep the chain from dropping.
Hope this is of help...

I randomly saw this which seems like an OK deal - its a big saving on retail for this model. roadcycleexchange.com/collections/new/products/giant-tcx-slr-1-sram-rival-size-large-1I have last years TCX with Shimano 2x, which I upgraded to hydraulic discs. I have sram 1x on my mountain bike and can compare 2x and 1x. For riding off road quickly 1x seems really, with the sram kit shifting really well. Having 2x on my cross bike can be a bit confusing in a race, not knowing exactly where to be while concentrating on lots of other things (but thats partly an experience thing). I found my stock Giant wheels to be incredibly heavy and not very well built - so I ended up upgrading them. I ride my TCX as a road bike too and it's great. The difference between the SLR 1 and SLR 2 in the TCX range is the fork - the SLR 1 has a lighter full carbon fork. These TCX's have tons of tyre clearance too which is good.
