Taking Steve Sorba’s great work as a shining example I’m trying to gage interest in a regular Sunday club ride at a slower pace. Depending on popularity these rides could vary in speed and distance in order to cater for as many riders as possible.
I’m aware that quite a few groups are out on Sundays regularly already but for one reason or another these rides often don’t make it onto the forum. I’m hoping to coax these groups back into the public light as well as encourage other riders to join in the Sunday fun.
I’m happy to lead some of the rides but unlike Steve, can’t commit to leading every single one. Ideally this responsibility could be shared by a handful of volunteers which would then probably only need to lead one ride a month or less depending on the number of leaders. But I’m jumping ahead...
Post here if you are interested! 📢🚴🏼♀️🚴🏼♂️

Michael Sanders's base training rides are a very useful addition to the Sunday winter club-ride scene. Strictly controlled pace (usually below that of the 'standard' Sunday ride) and varied routes, maybe he'll be starting them up again soon...? Michael...? I'm sure Gary Mac will have a few of his "Sunday Specials" to add to the mix, too.

Agree Michael's base rides were great but these haven't happened for the last two winters so there is certainly a gap for those of us that can't (or don't want to) ride Kent hills at 27kph. The last few years a few of us have tried leading ad-hoc base rides throughout winter but having something regular that is visible to everyone would certainly encourage better participation. I rode a lot of long rides solo or with one or two others last winter so it'd be great to have something happening each week we could know we'd have company. I'm happy to lead one a month.

I do miss Michael's controlled pace rides and the fun in risking Michael's ire when my heart went one beat above the allowed limit.
I think this is a great idea. As Kathryn said, sometimes it is nice to just go on a relaxing base ride with good company.

Like Kathryn, I could also commit to leading one a month or so. Great idea Katia.

Have you tried the DPNC ride on a Sunday? Not as speedy as Steve's and goes every week unless weather is awful.

Agree with Sara, the DPNC group does exactly that but they are very hard to find for new people (I must have been at least 8 months into my membership until I heard of them). I think one communication platform for everyone is more accessible.

Katia, I'm certainly interested in this, and I would be very happy to lead a ride every month, but I can't commit to this until early 2018.
When do you plan to run the first edition?

I also spoke to Steve last night at HHV, he agrees would be great to have options for different speed groups and would be keen that the start time and location is the same as the current faster Sunday club run, i.e. 9am Cadence for a 9:15am start. We can also use the same route, to be posted on the forum the week before (by whoever has a good suggestion). Perhaps initially we get people to commit to leading dates in the first few months...

Katia I would be keen to join these rides. Just what I’m looking for to get me into club rides - I currently don’t do any for fear of the pace!

First of all thank you Kathryn, Esther and Jeremy (from 2018) for offering to lead a ride a month. This is fantastic!
I was thinking very much along the same lines as Steve regarding the meeting place and start time, being the same as the 27kph ride. This gives everyone more choice and an option to change groups at the last minute.
To have one route for all is an excellent idea. Makes it so much easier.
Taking into consideration the support ride for the Leeds CX this Sunday and the Ladies Social on the 19th Nov, I suggest we start on the 26th Nov. I’m happy to lead this one. The remaining dates in 2017 are: 26th - Katia 3rd Dec -? 10th Dec - ? 17th Dec - ? 24th Dec? - Probably not. 31st Dec - a lot of people might be away but weather permitting, it would be fun to do at least a short one.
If Kathryn and Esther would like to pick a date and let me know or post it, that would be great. I will start a new thread for the ‘slower Sunday club ride’ (unless someone can come up with a better name) in the week before the 26th. I haven’t got much experience with routes so am open for suggestions, but will have a look on strava too.
I hope everyone is happy with this. If not let us know!
