I've been trying tin foil (actually space blanket) wrapped feet recently.. slightly warmer, though I suspect investing in winter boots is the better solution Yes, normal tinfoil disintegrates inside my shoe, so on the coldest days I use parchment-backed foil, which is coincidentally perfect for wrapping up your flapjack. Just don't use the same piece for both purposes.

I bought winter boots the other day. They're not as chunky as expected - anyone know if they'll still be warm ie does the supposed tech work? (They also do not take spd MTB, bit misled by the pics of soles, so wondering whether to keep...)

Remember to drink your water. I don’t get as thirsty when it’s cold so often forget to drink and get a bit dehydrated

If it is 2 degrees in Herne Hill at 8am it will be colder in the countryside.

I noticed the views of the velominati author in this month's cyclist. Idiosyncratic and style driven some might think. A thermal skull cap is a godsend if it's real cold. Personally I wear tights if it's coldish and regulate heat with arm warmers gilet jacket. I do agree zips at the ankles are better than stirrups because you put tights over overshoes in the fond hope the rain will stay out longer.

If it's proper chilly I've been known to add a second leg layer - Ron Hill Bikesters - full stirrups but at bargain at £15!

Join a cycling club (probably DPCC) Layer up but use gilets, arm and leg warmers for flexibility Always have a long sleeved water/wind proof top which should keep the chill out, even if you’re maybe a layer (or possibly two) light and have realised that there’s always a possibility of rain Don’t scrimp on fluids as you may dehydrate more through respiration in the Winter than through perspiration Get out and ride with your clubmates

Kneewarmers 10<15' (says BC via Patrick Cox) Tights or full legwarmers <10' (says Sara)
(I go for tights but then I am a lady and ignore Velominati when it comes to VLL aka visible legwarmer lines aka muffin thigh)
