interesting article comparing the 20 min and the 30 min FTP tests (though no mention of the ramp test) main point seems to be that the 5% discount is a little harsh, given the psychological differences between a test and a race situation. thebikegeek.blogspot.com/2017/05/ftp-testing-coggan-or-friel-is-5.htmlthis would be merely splitting hairs, but the main issue comes in the potential for training zones to be set too low. unders/overs for eg should be within a fairly tight banding around FTP.

Note that Coggan's protocol calls for a 5-min ALL OUT effort before the 20 minute test. After that, even with 10 mins rest, it's hard to ride just at your FTP, let alone 5% above it.
(I think more common is people doing a 20 minute test without that effort first. Which leads most people to overestimate their FTP, as not many people can actually hold 95% of that power for a whole hour. I've never been able to, anyway)

Thought I'd resurrect this thread to share some interesting wisdom from the TR forums.
The structure of the ramp test is such that if you can last for longer than 19'30" then you're adding to your current FTP. Less and your FTP result will be less. If you can easily beat this breakeven point then your FTP setting was too low.
You mileage may very etc, but I like this as it gives something to aim for (and collapse in a miserable sweaty heap immediately after)
