Um... can anyone offer any advice on where to go/who to see for collarbone surgery in London? Jayne Paine fell awkwardly while descending in Italy yesterday. X-Ray from the local (Riccione) hospital shows a messy fracture (not a clean break). If we were to stay here until Wednesday, they said that they would need to put a plate in (waiting list, means Wednesday soonest). But we're flying back to London tomorrow and wondered if anyone can recommend a surgeon/hospital in London? Does one just report to A&E?

A&E is your first port of call, Roger. And send Jayne my best - and tell her I'm sorry I won't be seeing her at Palace for a while.

Thanks David; we'll do that (head straight to A&E).
Yup... she'll not be riding Palace this Tuesday. But is keen for an early return. CP crits are such a fine tradition.

Hi Roger Sorry to hear about Jayne. As someone who broke their collar bone a few months ago and until recently a nurse I would say A&E should be ok as long as it a major London Hospital. My advice for a supposedly simple break wasn't entirely satisfactory from an outer London hospital. They don't always have the expertise. If Jayne has private cover I would consider using it. I was recommended a Mr Steven Corbett at London Bridge.Sports specialist. My best advice was given from Nichola Roberts who runs Velophysio in the city and Sydenham. Nic@velophysio.co.uk or her mobile is on the web site. She would be great for follow up advice at least. Good luck Jayne.

+1 for Kings A&E. They'll quickly figure out whether it's simple (basically sling and painkillers) or more complicated (surgery). I've broken three collarbones (not all at the same time), two simple, one complicated.
Everything worked out fine, no lasting side effects.
You'll be back on your bike soon enough.

Oh no, pass on best wishes. Lucy and I did ours in consecutive years, as usual Lucy did it better and got metal work. The NHS will a fine job with the bones, but won’t do much about any damage to connective tissue, worth getting in to see a phisio as soon as stabilised (few days if plated, 4-6 weeks if simple) to get the surrounding area assessed and start working on strength and range of movement if anything else is messed up. It’s common to damage ac joint too.

This is the thread of the week... only a bunch of cyclists would trade notes about broken collar-bones. Sorry for Jayne, of course. But I'm loving it.

Best wishes to Jane, roger. I like to think the club (with a little help from its friends) is single-handedly responsible for making Kings the centre of excellence for broken clavicles😅

I echo what Hector and Karen said - Kings will do a grand job of the surgery but the follow up is poor. Get in to see Nic Roberts soon after for some physio to ensure it heals quickly and well. Healing vibes to Jayne!

many thanks for the fantastic advice and best wishes. we'll take it all :-)
we'll be boarding the plane from Bologna this afternoon and aim to head straight to A&E (before those full of Saturday-night shandy fill the place)
Jayne is perky (I would be crying like a baby). she was leading the descent just before she had a lie down
