Simon Collins, no problem, give me a shout. @tallyho, I'm sorry I agree with Graham again - I've built plenty of wheels for more 'gentlemanly' riders with Open Pros and they build up perfectly strong enough if the spoke tension is right. As Graham says, strong wheels are not just about strong rims, you must have even, high, spoke tension. "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt is an excellent book on the theory and physics of wheel building and well worth a read to learn about how to 'tailor' wheels to their riders and purpose. Miche Racing Box hubs and Rigida DP18 rims are a good choice for keeping costs down, but DP18s are heavy rims (nearly 600g each). I mainly build DP18s with track hubs for the fixie / hipster crowd because when de-stickered they look a lot like Velocity Deep Vs. If you're going for low budget but strong, Rigida Chrinas aren't bad, or Mavic Open Sports are under 500g (and under £25 each). I like the guys at BC a lot, and James is a great mechanic, so I don't want to take any business away from them. But I would urge people to shop around - I'll certainly give discounts if we supply all the parts, and I'll try and match or better other people's prices. Hope this helps...

@pierre. I used to find in crits that going into right handers at speed would produce an alarming wobble in the rear wheel with the Open pros. Out of the saddle hill efforts also felt a bit noodly.
I asked for my current set to be two cross non-drive and three cross on the drive side. The better tension balance has made a stiffer rear wheel.
The DP18s were chosen precisely because they weigh a ton, probably had a good rim wall thickness and were dirt cheap. I had come to the end of my tether with factory training wheels whose rims wore right through within six months or hubs that nearly seized when mediocre bearings started giving up. I am happy to say the Miche R box / DP18 are displaying absolutely none of the above so far.
I am finally building up a pair of Kinlin Niobium 30mm aero rims that I have had lying about for a couple of years. Hubs are planet X superlite. Should end up around 1530 grams the pair. Not sure whether to use rim washers or not. I might just give them to one of the aforementioned builders in this thread who know what they are doing......
