I have mentioned to a few of you that I was planning to arrange some group FTP tests, so here's the suggestion:-
Where & When? Wattbike studio at Cadence at 8am on Saturday 26 November
What is FTP? Functional Threshold Power is a (some would say the) measure of fitness. In short it's an estimate of how hard you can ride for about an hour, with your effort being measured in watts.
Why FTP? Regular FTP testing will allow you to measure improvements in fitness over time. It also provides a meaningful number upon which to set your cycling-specific training zones.
Why Group Testing? Many of us either do not own a power meter, or lack the discipline/motivation/knowledge to self-test, or don't have the money to get privately tested. Group testing is affordable and also more sociable than doing it on your own in the garage/shed/cave.
How? There will be a coach to lead the session. All you need is some suitable clothing, a bottle, cycling shoes (they have pedals to fit most popular cleats or you can wear flat shoes) and a small towel to mop your fevered brow.
Booking & payment. Places for up to 16 people. Bookings may be secured by posting on this thread, emailing me and making a bank transfer for £10, assuming we have at least 12 takers. First come, first served. No refunds but you can give your place to someone else if you have to drop out. Ideally, further sessions in, say, Jan, April, July will be booked if there are sufficient takers.
BTW, I'm going to suggest a rule that we discuss changes in FTP but not absolute numbers! Post now if interested!

I would love to attend another one of these if possible; I'm not in London on 26 Nov.

Sounds great Patrick. I'd really like to come but have family staying that weekend - do you know how much time we'll need to allow for the session?

I'm interested but I'm not sure I could achieve ftp at 8am!
If you don't own a power meter is it still helpful? Eg advise you on optimal heart rate /cadence /gear ratio /whether you are eligible for ppi compensation?

Hi Malcolm - def worth doing these sessions, even if you don't use your own power meter, as it's an excellent way of measuring improvements (in my case, er changes) in fitness. The idea is that we'll do these regularly, say once a quarter.

Hi Patrick - is this the 20 min test (10 min warmup, 20 min test) that you're planning, or is it a full hour test? Got confused reading the first post.

Good idea! My last ftp test was 2 years ago so it's definitely time for another one.
