Ford Manor Park hosted the last CX race of 2017 and it proved to be a happy hunting ground for Dulwich Paragon.
The course started with a section of grass with a few turns before entering a wooded technical section which was largely rideable. After leaving the wooded area, riders rode onto the top of the hill which was exposed to the elements, descended, ascended, descended again with a zig zag section before being greeted by some barriers on the next ascent of the hill. After hopping off the bike and running up the hill, riders made their way down the hill following even another zig zag section before coming into the finishing straight.
The day got off to a good start with Milo Summers of HHY finishing second in the under 14 race.
Next up was the men’s V40/V50 race. Coach Codrington finished 3rd with Joe Booth claiming 11th . As Codrington smiled from ear to ear on the podium, it was his podium attire which drew attention on social media. One man tweeted “@eastkentcx do you know if friends or family can buy club kit for members of Dulwich Paragon until midnight on Christmas Eve? #subliminalmessaging”.
The following race saw the women and juniors take the line. The junior race was won by someone in a Santa Claus suit but there were no gifts in the senior women’s race as Olivia Campbell was made to work hard for her second place, her second podium in as many weeks. She refused to be drawn on whether a family member would receive her prize of WD40 as a present on Christmas Day.
The rain started to fall before the start of the men’s senior race which caused one rider to fret over whether he should wear a base layer. After canvassing opinion for what felt like an eternity, Jon Cox decided to keep the base layer on.
Dave Rees bettered his result at Ford Manor Farm last year (5th) with an extremely impressive 2nd place behind Michael Butler. Rees refused to speak to the media following the race citing unfair treatment which he received following B’Twin’s decision to end their sponsorship deal with him. Sources close to Rees say that he is close to signing a deal with a leading motor home company in Belgium.
While Rat Race will be disappointed that they won’t have his custom this week, Jon Cox showed what he can do when he can stay mechanical free with a solid 9th place. We can only wonder how he would have fared without the base layer.
In a demonstration of seasonal goodwill, I allowed a rider in a elf costume to come past me on the final corner to finish 14th with Chris Platt finishing in 18th.
Next race is at Herne Hill on New Year’s Day.
