Hi Everyone,
Those of you who live near a recently installed LTN may have recently received notices regarding consultations. I'm not presuming all of us will be in favour or retaining them but if you are then all the more reason to add your words of support. Though I'd presume that most of us have few issues about riding on the roads of South London generally, being experienced and all that, I think it would be great to support intiatives that can enable the less confident to take to the bike or have less hostile environments to walk/scoot/ride. Around Crystal Palace the LTN south/west of the Triangle there have been parents biking out with their kids, feeling safe to all be on the road, in a way I haven't seen before. I suspect we've all noticed the increase in cyclists over the last few months and enjoyed the quieter roads!
Consultations are open to everyone who has an interest and many of us use the approaches to CP on the bike even if living further away. In Croydon you can visit croydon.gov.uk/streetspace and submit responses up until 4th December. Around here, as in other areas, much of the anti-LTN reaction has been from a vocal minority and a number of the particularly active supporters are from fringe groups such as the Association of British Drivers (members of which seem to have a line in climate change denial, fair bit of racism, anti-mask-Covid-conspiracy nonsense etc.). F*r*ge jumping on the anti-LTN/anti-cyclist bandwagon recently should give you an idea!
Reducing car dependency is a good thing imo - good for public health (mental and physical), improves air quality, reduces congestion and frees up space for those who do need to travel by car, and can have the effect of making the roads generally a less hostile space.
I put my hands up and say that, perhaps, I have a particular investment in supporting the LTNs as a Trustee of LCC but more importantly (in my opinion), as a walker and cyclist I want space to be created space for others to look at alternative/active ways of travel in London.
If you're in the CP area and want to get more involved in the support for the LTNs around here drop me a line and I can point you in the right direction.
