From Pezcyclingnews - www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=6654&status=True&catname=Latest%20News PEZ: And how is your build up going?Dan: I’m on target – this time last year I was maybe going too well. I want to go into Langkawi at 85% and come out at 95% but I want to be at 100% for Paris-Nice and the Giro.
I’ve been doing gym work and a lot of mountain bike riding because the roads have been icy. I’ve only done one four hour ride, mostly it’s been three hour rides but with 30 minute blocks at 90% effort – to improve endurance.
I don’t want to be doing full-on intervals at this time of year, but I use the long efforts at 23/24 mph to build my endurance.
You could go out and do six hours at 16 mph and you’d build endurance; but you’d also get cold, wet, tired and depressed in this weather!

I've never done more rides of more than 3 or 4 hours during the winter. It is too cold and miserable to be out for longer than that.
This is roughly what Brian was recommending at the meeting though wasn't it? Two 3/4 hour rides at the weekend at endurance pace with some time trial intensity intervals thrown in.

Just thought it was interesting. If a long ride of 3hrs is enough in January for a rider who wants to excel at Paris Nice in March (7 stages of 5-6hrs each), then I'd say 3hrs is more than enough for anyone who wants to excel in 2hr 2/3/4cat road races.

I agree except for one point -- it's pretty clear the interview was taken in december, eg quotes like: I’m going to a friend’s house in Portugal to train until Xmas; Or at the bottom: ...we’ll be talking to him again in January when... He may be onto longer rides now that he's in portugal - but then, that makes sense too, who wouldn't be.

Russ D prescribes the two short rides a day regime (come all weathers) and the wearing of some long stockings in between rides. He lasted the Worlds with a commendable ride, so it must work. So commuting training is the way to go, but I'm not so sure about the wearing of stockings at work.
