Dave, attention to detail -1 point. It was James & Andy who are riding as a pair, not James & Charles :-)

… And they're about 50k apart, too!

I think that's just an illusion caused by time-lag on Andy's dots. James seems to have the live transponder, Andy seems to be tracked by something less updatey. If you compare time-stamps, they still look to be riding together.

Good luck to all three of you, I kind of envy you, and then again I don't! For those that have not watched this here's a great film of last years race that really captures the gruelling effort that lies ahead for all the riders. What effort, what madness! vimeo.com/176424978

Indeed good to luck to all taking part. It's a massive challenge I'd be too daunted to take on.
Indeed, part of me feels incredibly guilty sitting at work as I type this knowing all the contestants are riding across Europe as I type - even being able to track on a map! And are no doubt suffering from a number of issues including and probably not limited to sleep deprivation, muscle cramps, saddle sores, stiffness and mental torture - that's probably going to get more acute as they progess!
Massive round of applause to anyone that manages to complete this.

It's an amazing race, best of luck to all three of them.
I'm a semi official dot-watcher so can vouch that the live tracking isn't always completely live - there have been some slight problems with trackers, but overall they give a good general impression of where the riders have been and when, and how fast they were going. They help us keep an eye out for people who are in difficulty and / or stopped for longer than we'd expect (some riders have already scratched) so we can contact the riders and check they're OK. And they help us spot if anyone's cheating too - the rider doing 90+kph for a couple of hours on a dual carriageway isn't likely to be unassisted, for example!
But yes, it's an incredible challenge, both physically and mentally. Am in utter awe.

Fascinating watching. James and Andrew look well settled as the leading pair and high up overall. If I'm right Charles got tri-bars fitted just before hitting the Mountains?!?.
Stuart Bernie and Kristof seem to have the most unique routes.
A taste of what they're headed for:
Quote from another place: "What surprises me at the sharp end is that only Kristof took the easy sleigh ride through the Sava valley while the others are scaling their way through the coastal mountains. The Knin area is at least as landmine infested as the northern bit, the part they're going to hit north of the Bosnian border is even more devastated (although the upper Una valley is superb cycling territory). I just hope that none of them chooses an empty pockmarked building with graffiti as a place to bed down tonight...."

James and Andrew have finished riding and are waiting for the ferry in Eceabat to cross into Asia in 15th place overall and 1st pair. 11 and a half days!!1! Great riding - Well done. Charles just made his final descent out of the mountains and into Kosovo but does anyone know if Jayne's OK? Her tracker's stopped responding over a day ago.

Saw a tweet about Jayne closing in on CP4, issues with tracker, hopefully can be fixed.

Oh good Jayne has fixed her tracker and passed CP4. A chance for Charles to put those clip-on tri bars to use at last.

Whoever is behind the Twitter updates, thanks for keeping us updated!
I'm getting to the stage where I'm using Street view to get a picture of what's left for Charles to cover. Blimey that E87 in Turkey, the "finish line", looks even worse than the E2/25. Testers heaven, they just need to build few roundabouts there. I feel for Charles though, riding through this in that heat!
Allez, allez!

Well done James, Andy and Charles, absolutely brilliant achievement. Actually well done to every rider who finished. What a monumental effort, emphasis on the mental bit! I hope you're all recovering well.
