Am thinking of trying these guys out to hire a bike rather than buy one for my son...does anyone have any experience of this? thebikeclub.co.uk

sounds a good idea. I was forever buying bikes for our 4 even after handing them down. Or you could make friends with a family with older children for a regular supply of cast off bikes! I suppose there might even be room for a used bike whatsapp/fb group.

It costs about £6.80 a mth for a brand new Frog balance bike, which is £190 new. I figured he'd probably only use that for a year. They say they dont charge for usual wear and tear but i can imagine I not hand it back in the same condition it came! It does seem like a more environmentally friendly way of getting through bikes!

The other option is www.islabikes.co.uk their bikes are light and rather than just using generic components they ensure that they fit for the age range the bike is designed for. The real selling point is that they retain a high amount of their purchase price. Check out their website and eBay. If you buy well, either from Isabikes or eBay and keep the bike in good order then when you come to sell on you'll get a good price. We went through quite a few islabikes!

Thinking out loud here but I wonder if the club could do something? We have a bike box hire scheme - could we do something similar with some islabikes? Would need someone to administer and we’d need to consider maintenance.
Thoughts?

Great idea - wonder if it's something Pete at RatRace might consider...?

Yeh these guys do a full service on the bikes when they get them back and then rent them out as refurbs which are a bit cheaper than the brand new ones. Definitely would need mechanical support if the club were to run something. It'd be good to find out what the demand in the club is for decent kids bikes

Provided you can get the bike your kid actually wants (colour scheme mainly!). If yours are anything like mine The older they get the more fussy they become... But yeah - realistically if you want a frame that fits your kid you need to be buying one every couple of years. and handing down from boy to girl is now about to become an issue. Might have to give it a go!
