Who's out tonight? Looking at all the sunshine out of my window is making my legs go all twitchy.
5 degrees in the countryside, and 10mph gusts - sounds pretty good after a wet winter.

Yeah I've been on most of the Wednesday chaingangs this year. Also went to a Thursday one a few weeks ago the night the Dulwich dinner was on so there was no other Dulwich riders there that night.

OK, I made it back. Seemed like a very strange ride to me. A couiple of riders went off the front, and I never saw them again. Andlater, some confusion about wether to chase riders, or wait for riders (I might be blamed for this, but I'm honestly a bit confused).

We set off at 7.15, pretty much on the dot I think.
Guy and I rode off the front by accident, and once we saw we had a gap, thought we might as well push on. I was surpised we never got caught though. No one really seemed to know what they were doing tonight, and at the start there were only 3 or 4 of us working. I put a turn in and no-one came in to take over - next thing I know, it's just me and Guy by ourselve. Are people really not fit enough to do their share of the work at 20mph, after only 15minutes of riding?

Hmm... well... The start of that chaingang was rather shambolic. Why is everybody lined out instead of two abreast? Why was Andy left to ride the front of the line on his own with no one taking over? Does everybody understand through and off? It involves someone going through, and then pulling off. What we had was a long single line of riders with only a few prepared to stick their noses in the wind. That isn't a chaingang, it's a procession. Which was why I wasn't too upset to clip off with Andy. If all the riders were doing through-and-off you should have been faster and reeled us in easily.
Whether to chase or wait isn't the question, if I understand correctly. The fastest and hardest working riders will be circulating at the front, followed by a tail of riders hanging on which gets smaller and smaller as riders are dropped. It is quite cruel, but there you go. The idea is the slower riders get faster, not the other way round. There are two places to wait for riders - Badgers Mount roundabout and Farnborough Village traffic lights. All riders should be able to join up there. Any that don't or can't, ride home alone (as many have done).
Anyway here are some numbers from my Polar CS200, quite basic... Door-to-door, same as yours Rich

Yes, a few new starters, and they will get stronger.
But I'm missing some of those riders who I suspect no longer feel that the chaingang is meeting their training needs, and I'm wondering do we need an 'intermediate' chaingang, maybe on Thursday...?

I have spent several months on the Wednesday one before moving to Tuesday, I believe this is the way to do it? My short experience of faster rides shows that if I try to take all the turns from the beginning, I will blow up quickly... So, I admit it, my aim is to hang on at the back for as long as possible. It sounds like few others had the same aim tonight Serge (Red Trek bike and Red top)

Well done for having a go, Serge - I guess that's how everyone starts. Keep coming back and you'll soon be mixing it. Try doing the through and off on the flatter or downhill stretches to start with and you will improve for sure.
