Just been looking at the data from last night's chaingang on the summer route. And for those wondering what the real average speed is I can confirm that from West Wickham to Bromley (the active part of the chaingang where we're not just riding tempo) we averaged 23mph (37km/h). Over the full distance Elmer's End to top of Crystal Palace Park Road it was a more sedate 20.5mph (33.5km/h) average speed.
So there we have it, definitive speeds for the chaingang for those riders doing Wednesday's gang and wondering whether to give Thursday's one a try.

Data from this Wednesdays' ride:
Faster group did the summer route plus an extension along Pilgrims Way then back home via Polhill.
I had 19.5 average speed from Elmers End to Crystal Palace. Felt like a good ride! I'll try and get the average on the section you mention next time.
BTW. Congrats Kevin and Julene! It's the start of a new life for all of you...

I haven't done the chaingang since last summer. It was really good fun to have a proper burn up with Kevin, David, Graham etc, and especially good to see Jeff who I hadn't seen for a long old time.
More of the same i hope.

So you did the Tuesday/Thursday summer chaingang route, and not much more slowly. It makes me wonder if the Wednesday chaingang is now not much different to Tuesday's and Thursday's. Perhaps it would be good if the faster riders on Wednesday moved onto Tuesday or Thursday so that the Wednesday pace slowed a little? This may encourage more people to have a go who are thinking of stepping up to the chaingangs from the weekend rides.

Quite agree, but I couldn't do Tuesday and Thursday would have killed me off.
There was a good turn out and the ride was organised at Elmers End into groups of varying abilities so I think it should have catered for all. Any comments from other Wednesday riders?
(We had several Addiscombe riders and some other non Dulwich chaps in the faster group.)

I see, so Wednesday splits into a normal speed gang (similar to Tues/Thurs) and a slower ladies gang? Sounds like a good solution.

"Slower ladies gang"?! Excuse me Mr Knox ... some of the ladies have been known to flicker amoung the fast/med groups on a weds Its definitely turned into a nice combined group of speeds, everyone picking the pace that suits them. On weds we ended up with 3 groups ...

Hear, hear... and there's a few gentlemen who consider it an honor to try and keep up with them (even if they can't...) Like most rides this club organises, the numbers seems to grow each week - and the faster/slower split is a natural development. I know there's a few more female riders who want to have a go but are a bit nervous of the pace... well, don't be... The point of this ride (or at least this end of it) is to learn through-and-off, not to try and rip the legs off each other, so the group should roll at a pace that keeps it unified. It's summer route now, so it's Layhams > Hesiers > Chelsham Court Rd > Croydon Road > Clarks Lane > Church Hill > Tatsfield Lane > Spinning Wheel. Then back through Biggin Hill to Bromley Common and as per winter route back to Elmers End. You'll need lights.

Last time I did Wednesday chaingangs there weren't any women out and it was a pretty sedate pace, but that was before Christmas. Things are clearly changing for the better, maybe some of the quicker women will be out on Thursdays/Tuesdays soon?

The week Guy and I won the Tuesday (or was it Thursday?) chaingang we averaged 34.5kph from Elmers End to the cross roads just before Bromley. I think my computer was set up not to account for stops at the time though, so that includes hanging around at the lights a few times.

There were 2 groups to start with, then I dropped off the back of the 2nd group with 2 new girls and Mr.....pink??? The girls were Louise (sports massage therapist for those interest in such) who is working on fitness, and new girl Claire who's just back from (ahem) having fun in the Alps.
We worked very well together just maintaining the pace and working the rotation. When we got to the top of Badgers Mount, we picked up Sarah and came back in what seemed to me to be a very disciplined group.
