Help! I've bought one of those Polar cs200cad things and if the truth be told I haven't got a clue what to do with it. Has anyone got any advice on the best way to establish max heart rate etc. and what to do with such information once I have it?

I'm probably not the best person out here to answer this - there are plenty of people who know a lot more than I do about this and I haven't tried to reach my maximum heart rate in a couple of years. However, there's loads of information on using and training with a heart rate monitor available on the internet. There are a lot of sites which tell you how to reach your MHR and none of them are easy. It'll be best to use a turbo trainer if you can and the cadence monitor will help you maintain your effort. Anyway, do a google search on something like "cycling maximum heart rate test" and have a read through the different results. Whichever one you like the sound of, give it a go. I quite like the second method on this page: www.timetrialtraining.co.uk/S6MaxHeartRateTests.htm

Thanks Neil, I think I'll give that one a go on the turbo this evening. I'm hoping to attempt the marmotte alpine sportive in a couple of months and given my fitness level I'm going to need to be fairly serious about my training from now on if I'm going to have a hope in hell of finishing it.
