Just heard the terrible news: Four cyclists including a 14-year-old boy have been killed and another eight people injured after an accident with a car in north Wales. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_west/4592412.stm Another reminder, if we need any, to be careful out there.

Very shocking indeed. Unfortunately being careful wouldn't have made any difference to these guys. A minute's silence next Sunday?

A minute's silence next Sunday? I think that would be fitting. I'll be happy to say a few words. 9.30 sharp.

I think a minute's silence would be an appropriate gesture against the background of this tragedy.
Perhaps it might be best to do the minute's silence mid-ride to enable some quiet moments of contemplation undisturbed by traffic, passers by, etc. The Saturday ride is relatively easy. Just before the descent to Beddlestead Lane would be one opportunity that springs to mind. Sunday ride, location to be decided.

Excellent idea Ken. I will be away, but will try and encourage my fellow cyclists at La Santa to do something.

I think it would be fitting. From a commissairing colleague: ======================================== My apologies if you've already know about this, however to honour the members of the Rhyl CC, there has been a suggestion on the Veloriders forum (http://www.veloriders.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=32759 and since repeated on the other forums) that we all wear black armbands on our rides this Sunday. If you don't have an armband then black insulating tape is fine. The following e-mail is going to the National newspapers, BBC website etc:- "I am writing to you representing the cycling website www.veloriders.co.uk to inform you and ask for your assistance in publicising this for us. In light of the terrible catastrophe that occurred last Sunday in North Wales in which four cyclists from Rhyl Cycling Club lost their lives, the word is spreading through the cycling world that as a mark of respect to the riders and to their families left behind, that all cyclists that take to the roads on Sunday 15th January 2005 (2006?), either in group clubruns as the Rhyl CC did, or on their own, as so many do every weekend, that people could wear a black armband . It doesn't have to be ornate, indeed black tape would suffice, anything to show that our thoughts are with them. Cyclists all round the country have been rocked by this accident as we all feel so vulnerable on the roads anyway with increasing traffic volume, we all go out on group rides and the thoughts of most riders with which I have spoken is that "it could so easily have been them." www.veloriders.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=32784 Bradley Wiggins and the Cofidis team will be wearing armbands this Sunday. Having said I'd be there with my roll of tape and a few well chosen words I regret to say I have double booked myself. The choir is singing at morning service this Sunday and I can't really duck out of that to help you with your act of rememberance.
