Quick comments on tonight's slow group chaingang: Going through Pilgrim's Way was sketchy as hell, it was so dark I could barely see the road, as could anyone else. It's probably time to switch to the winter route. The group I was in worked really well, with the exception of one guy who I don't think quite "gets it", so to recap: The chain gang is about working as a team, so to make the chain gang effective it needs all its riders to make smooth transitions throughout - sprinting to the front does not increase the group's coherence, if somebody on the overtaking line who is 4 riders in front of you is not doing it fast enough for your liking, going three abreast to try and get to the front and once again break the rhythm of the group does not increase the group's coherence. If the ride is not fast enough for you, then don't turn up to the "Women's" Wednesday chaingang and choose the slow group. These groups are for people who want to increase both their fitness and experience of riding in a group. Alvaro Well said that man.

I grabbed him and pulled him back when he tried to go three abreast on the return from Pohill, and quite sternly told him it wasn't appropriate, but didn't get a chance to speak to him on the way back as the whole group disappeared off to Crystal Palace without stopping by Bromley. Youth may have had something to do with it Wow! you are amazing - what a little speech. fabulously welcoming ....we sat at the lights in beckenham for over a minute and you couldn't "catch up" and mention it.... 50km of decent chain riding and you make it sound like the whole ride was agony! *the travesty* I've seen guys almost die at roundabouts to get a gap and you're complaining about a little over eagerness. I appreciate your control over the group! it was effective. I dropped back and understood my mistake... job done. Why make yourself / and a situation into more than it was! So quick to judge, if only others where as quick to start a chain.

Wow. I wish I could be bothered to create a new account to post a message under a pseudonym.
If you disagree with someone that is fine but be grown up enough to post under your real account and not under one you've made up overnight.
If you want context to what Alvaro has said perhaps read through the various threads regarding the Womens/Newbies/Steady Wednesday night chaingang and then you may understand why your actions were called out.

new member on forum... what can I say. sorry for not creating an account to get flamed earlier.
I accepted/and understood what Alvaro said at the time, lessoned learned for next time. case closed.
What I take exception to is the little speech about how I jumped 4 people and cycled off at bromley, no need to embellish a simple scenario. I didn't see him complaining about the bunch splitting into up poll hill/into village/into bromley : so serious question - is it meant to stay smooth and together the whole ride or not?

The fast chaingangs tend to be self-organising and can be smash-fests on the climbs quite often, not that I've ever managed to last that long on one of those On the slower chaingangs, rotation usually begins somewhere along Layhams, as soon as it seems more or less safe, and continues so until the bottom of Polhill. Polhill and Farnborough Hill are free for alls, with regroup points at the top of each one. The chainganning ends after the traffic lights at Farnborough village When I was trying to organise people into three groups at Elmers End, I asked if anybody had not ridden in a chaingang before, but no one raised their hand. One guy said he hadn't ridden the DP one specifically, was that you? Alvaro

no, I've ridden them before, mostly winter. but *seriously* they've never been as controlled as last night.
So I welcome the organisation and I'll be sure to check the group "rules" next time.

Tutoring riders in the 'steady' chaingang group can be a thankless task at times. It is supposed to be more organised and regimented than the fast gangs because riders are more inexperienced and want to learn the intricacies of through and off and riding in close pace lines. Therefore the emphasis is not on speed but on technique.
Mr Rogue, I suggest you and Alvaro kiss and make up, and maybe change your avatar to your real name. If you're going to be a regular on the chaingangs and want to get into racing too, then no doubt you'll get to know us all personally over time. Hopefully we can help you like the way we were helped when we started cycling in the club.

It's slightly depressing getting dropped after 15 minutes when the emphasis isn't on speed!! haha
I think that says more about where my fitness is at though. Must do better next time
Looking forward to this week. The weather looks good

Well said Michael. All in the same club & all that.. if there are issues around safety or you have a problem with something deal with it there & then. Much more constructive than afters on a forum..
Might be around tonight. Any takers?

No idea how long it's been like this as I've not been on the chaingang for a while. There are no streetlights on Polhill. It's not fun, to say the least.

Herne Hill Velodrome is the way forward for winter Wednesday's I'd suggest - better lit, more fun, no traffic, and a lot more sociable

Ah yes of course - I posted this in both the Wednesdays and Tuesday/Thursday threads as a bit of a warning - but anyone out on a Wednesday would be unlikely to choose the chaingang over the velodrome.
