I realise that most have yet to get away to the sun-drenched beaches scattered around Southern Europe so talk of mud racing the freezing cold is little pre-emptive, however the Cross season draws ever closer.
There’s a load of talk about Cross, all you need to know is it’s great fun, end of.
Incredible welcoming to riders of all ability or inability, Dulwich is one of the major CX clubs in the South East. Whilst punching above its weight with some some well impressive results last year (Dave R 3rd in seniors, Ed Davies 2nd in Juniors, and top 10 results in most of the other categories); all riders regardless of ability and fitness are very warmly welcomed on all rides, training sessions and at the races. You’ll find the competition is equally invigorating regardless of your position in the field.
This year the club has more training sessions than ever before, so if you have never embraced the ‘dark side’ and always wondered what the attraction was , now is the time to find out for yourself.
Training Sessions
Saturday Morning Off road ride : Leaving the Velodrome with the normal Saturday ride it will quickly abandon the tarmac for routes rougher. There will be skillz sessions incorporated into these rides. All are encouraged to have a go regardless of age, gender, fitness or ability. Meet at 9.00 am at the Velodrome – finishing approx. 1pm at Café Paradou. Suitable for both CX and MTB bikes.
Thursday Evening Off road Chain Gang: We’ll continue these rides for as long as weather/mud allows. Aimed at the fitter more competent rider these are hard training rides. Following a similar route each week they provide an excellent way to bench mark your improvement. Suitable for CX and MTB bikes.
Wednesday Evening Training at Herne Hill. These sessions are run in conjunction with the Track based Chain Gangs and will start in October. Sessions will include interval training inter mingled with training and practicing those skills. Aimed at those on CX bikes.
These sessions are followed by an optional technical lecture covering a broad range CX related issues in the Canopy Lecture Theatre.
All the CX training sessions are free to members and are run by a BC discipline specific qualified coach - incredibly that's me Jono - before you make some sarky comment.
Races
There are several series or leagues, however traditionally Dulwich have focused on the 3 ‘local’ leagues:
Summer Series, - 4 low key evening races in and around SE London, starting in July running through to mid-August, these are an excellent introduction in to CX racing
London League – the back bone of the season, weekly races on Sunday, courses scattered liberally around the South East.
East Kent League – a new arrival on the scene but well worth the trip , smaller fields and excellent courses.
Equipment
You don’t necessarily need a CX bike to have a go, there’s a load of bikes to borrow.
Women: BC operate a CX bike loan scheme allowing you to borrow a bike for the season.
Small people and Youth: We have the tie up with Herne Hill Youth and, subject to availability, can lend you a bike for season
Men: The club has a couple of entry level CX bikes that can be used for the season.
If you want further details on these loan bikes – reply to this thread in good time as it takes time and effort to arrange these loan bikes.
What to look forward to this season
London League Rd 8 at Leeds Castle 12th November – this is the race we organise, an infamous course with the world-famous castle in the background, can’t be missed.
National Series Rd 4 at Cyclopark 26 November – either compete or spectate – it will be awesome
Support the youth. That Titan of youngsters Ed Davies, after a brief holiday on the road, is planning to return to his roots competing in the National Junior Series. He’ll need all our support throughout the season.
