JUST REMINDING YOU ALL (AGAIN) THAT...It's less than two weeks now to this year's DULWICH FOOTPATH HILLCLIMB & SOCIAL - SAT JULY 22 at 2PM. A two-minute grunt up the hill, then the pub, pint (or two) and collect your prizes. What's not to love about it? It's also a perfect opportunity to mingle - and meet your new clubmates if you've recently joined us. Family and friends are welcome to come along and cheer, then join us afterwards in the garden of the Dulwich Wood House pub, where we will have our own reserved area. The hillclimb itself is a light-hearted challenge to see who can climb the 0.5km / 18% ramp that forms the footpath the fastest. We have permission from The Dulwich Estate, which owns the path and will be making a contribution to the local Leonard Cheshire home, by way of thanks. And there are PRIZES to be won!! Fastest Woman. Fastest Man. Fastest Junior (U-18)Fastest Vet (40+) Fastest Super-vet (50+) Fastest Master (60+)Whackiest Bike. Best Silly Outfit. Worst Kit. Fastest Fixie.Fastest Folding Bike. Lanterne Rouge. And new for this year... Fastest Newcomer (anyone joining the club in the last 3 months)And OTHER SURPRISE SPOT PRIZES we will award on the day. There's a modest £5 entry fee to cover CTT levies - but that allows you one attempt on as many categories as you want. What are you waiting for...? Wet Wet Wet....
The 4th Annual Dulwich Footpath Hillclimb was the usual grunt n grin fest with a couple of dozen or so dogged Paragonistas and Paragonettes givng it a go. Big thanks to all who kept times, marshalled, hung signs, took money, counted down, held riders and got the occasional spritz of rain to keep things real. Unfortunately, that rain put a few of our start list off (Rule V applies, chaps ) but the contest itself was as eagerly contested as ever. Sorry. Split infinitive: was contested as eagerly as ever. A few highlights: Little Smiler Libby's major effort as Wonder Woman With A Dodgy Knee saw her nail the Best Costume prize again, although Charlie Cod's attempt as a bee-keeper was a creditable second. In a wide-brimmed hat and veil with long white gloves there was more than a hint of a two-wheeled Miss Havisham about him as he pedalled off through the gloom. David Rees had his usual 19 attempts on various machines, culminating in a turn as a 90's pro-peloton poseur resplendent in violent yellow kit that hurt the eyes. It just needed Dr Fuentes with a blood-bag to complete the picture. Next year, Dave...?
That was the serious bit of the day: the actual riding produced some good times, considering the path was beginning to resemble an alpine torrent. Fastest man - Robin Jones with 0.59.3 (FYI - the course record is 0.45.05 set by Will Harper in 2013) Fastest woman - Esther Drabkin-Reiter with an unchallenged 1.32.6; Fastest Vet (40+) - James Tredray 0.59.7; Fastest Super-Vet (50+) - Robert Charnley 1.08.4; Fastest Master (60+) - Nigel Wood 1.42.3; Fastest Junior Eddie Davies with a NEW RECORD TIME of 1.03.8. One brave soul attempted it on a fixie: Philip Lingard in an impressive 1.25.7 and Fastest Newcomer (member having joined in the last 3 months) - Mark Ackroyd 1.16.4. Lanterne Rouge went to Libby Gordon (2.32.5) who has got a bad knee, to be fair. Special mention in despatches to two young 'uns - Toby Tredray and Lewis Birch, both under 10 - who showed the klnd of form and potential that speaks of future cycling success.
The soggy garden of the Wood House was abandoned this year in favour of the steamy fug of the bar, where prizes were distributed, backs patted - and beers consumed. And we're all winners in that department.
Til next next year

Thanks to everyone that organised and marshalled.
Looking forward to defending it next year..... hopefully there's a little more traction and a little more sunshine!
