The club now has two hard bike boxes which are available for club members to hire.
They are good quality Monoc boxes, like large Samsonite suitcases. They include wheel bags and have wheels on the base which makes them quite easy to move. They are quite narrow in profile so pedals need to come off & bars loosened, saddle dropped depending on frame size.
Terms of hire are first come first served via this thread on the message board. They will be available for collection from Bob - put your car back seats down first as they are large. There will be a £10 per week charge which is going towards a renewal fund to meet the cost of replacement in time.
There was an alarmist article in Cycling the other week about large sport boxes being banned on BA. Not quite right as I flew BA to the Pyrenees last week without any problems. The baggage rules are changing from October but as long as you keep one bag ( the bike box) to the 25k weight limit it should be ok. I would recommend packing shoes, helmet kit etc in the bike box and taking a mediumish rucksack or suitcase as a flight bag.
I'll be delivering them to Bob next week - if you need them before then post here and I'll reply.

Spoke to BA about this today.. Apparently from October 11th you will be able to take a bike box/bag on the plane and it will not be counted as part of your total weight allowance of 23kg (in the hold). Until then the rules remain as Nigel says.

Excellent! I'm going to ride the Pedro Delgado Aug 13th. I'll be leaving Friday 11th. When could I pick it up?
What a well organised club!

I'm planning on delivering the boxes to Bob after Palace next Tuesday so collection can be arranged at a time at Bob's convenience.
Happy etaping!
