Hi Folks, Some of you might be interested to give Beastway a go - it's an mtb series that's been going for about 13 years in different guises. Held at Eastway for many years, then Hainault Forest, it moves to Hog Hill this year to use the off-road sections at the new circuit. Though primarily an mtb series there is always a number of cross riders. A good way to brush up your skills for the autumn season. As competitive as you want to make it - some people ride for fun and others take it seriously and go for the points. Races are Wednesdays in July; 1st, 8th, 15th & 22nd are rounds with a team race on the final night, 29th July. Racing starts at 7.30pm for those who can make it out to Hainault in time. Entry fees are £10 for seniors, £7 Juniors and concessions (with ID) and £5 for youths. More info here: www.cycleweb.co.uk/beastway/series2008/index.htmlOr ask me (I'm on the board!).

That's the beauty of 'cross/MTB. There's always someone in front and (usually) behind so no peloton to lose and no drafting effect to miss.
So long as you don't mind getting more muddy than you ever dreamed possible. (In the winter that is)
There is a great little taster of cyclocross at the HH velodrome toward the end of summer on Wednesday nights. That was my introduction last year and I shall be back for more.

At Hainault we were getting about 100 people each race night - you might get lapped but you'd never be dropped.
The Hog Hill courses (course-meister Ray Blackwell tries to design a different one for each week) will probably be dusty when dry but very muddy when wet as the seeding/planting hasn't really taken hold yet and dozens of riders charging round the circuit for an hour is bound to churn the ground up a lot.

£10 to enter, 100 riders, pretty penny, wonder if the evicted newts know about this.

Yes, if only there were no costs involved us organisers could spend all the Thursdays in July down the pub.

I think I'll be heading out for this one if it's dry. Might be a bit of a slog home on knobblies.

Probably - though there is a slim chance of a lift back in one of the Structureless Tyrants cars (I can find out for you!).

Hi Folks - we're doing a full season of mtb races at Hog Hill this year. Starts tomorrow (19th May). There are 10 weeks of rounds and we finish with a team race on 28th July. I know Hog Hill is a trek, particularly if if you have to get out there from town after work but if anyone fancies giving it a bash (on mountain bike or cross) then give me a shout. Main details can be found here: www.beastway.com

Getting to Hog Hill isn't too much of a problem in the evening. I've been catching the train from Liverpool Street to Goodmayes and riding up from there. Leave Liverpool Street at 6:27, get to Hog Hill just after 7:00 for the summer series road races (or Beastway).

I'll be there, on my Solitude singlespeed. Somewhere near the back...

Hi Pete - youre no.73 aren't you? You seemed to have a good race. I think we had trouble with the mats reading your chip though we were running the backup system as well as the new system so you're in the results anyway!
We'll check it next week and if the chip isn't registering properly we'll issue you a new one.

Hi Sarah, yes that was me. Thanks for letting me know! (and thank you all again for the work you put into Beastway every week, we really do appreciate it)
Was the chip reading a common problem, or am I just awkward? I'm happy to faff with it if there's a way to make it easier to read...

Hi Pete, Thank you! Always nice to know we're appreciated!
Turns out that your chip was being read by the mat fine, but your chip and a couple of others weren't 'imported' successfully from the registration software program to the timing software program. 3 out of over 100 riders wasn't too bad for a first try so hopefully this Wednesday we can double check this and all will go smoothly!
