I was going to order the Kinesis Evo 3 frame today for cyclo cross but it doesn’t have any lugs for bottles, is this a major deal? Most cross races are an hour right, so you could just about make it through without a drink but I think I may struggle.
In which case are there any other famesets anyone could recommend? I was looking at Planet X (uncle John). Is this any good?
Stuck and in need of some guidance in this stuff!
Cheers.

Uncle John is fine. And was VERY cheap for a while, not sure about the prices now.
crossjunkie.blogspot.com has a review of the Uncle John I think.
Drinks — I've never had a drink in a cross race, although there have been times I would have liked one, mostly right at the beginning of the season when it's still warm. By October though, you'll be fine just having a drink as you wait on the startline.

The problem with bottle cages is if you have to get your bike onto your shoulder, the bottle cage just gets in the way. I've just bought one of these: tinyurl.com/lzqnjzReally ugly and heavy compared to my (squashed) S-Works Tricross frame but it'll do the job for someone with my lack of fitness...

cool thanks Andy. The Uncle John is still very cheap so i may go for that. I can't justify a big spend (missus and the fact that i haven't raced in a looooong time) plus the ability to carry drinks mean i can use this bike for going out on club rides in the winter... its a selling point to the wife! Do the drinks bottles -or even the lugs get in the way when racing? The x-wing looks really good, but too small for me. What about this? tinyurl.com/lf7ddoA frame called Allan sound dodge to me... I pretty much have everything now except the frame, the vittoria XG tyres arrived today, they look swanky!

Ahhh, i see mark has just answered one of my questions! That frame is ruddy well cheap! so how much does it weigh? i'm carrying a summer of enjoyment round my waist so any more on the bike I just can't handle!

You could always use a small drinks bottle in the rear pocket. Runners have all shapes and sizes of bottles. I got a runners belt from Lidl (£4.99) that has 3 such bottles with rubbery end caps like a cycling drinks bottle, you can also use them for gels. Approx 250ml.
There are also plastic bottle boss clasps available that allow for mounting extra bottles to a frame. Touring specialists usually stock stuff like this. They tend to be for older tubing dias but could be adapted. Two Cateye mounts could also be adapted using larger self tappers to secure the bottle cage to each screw cap. It would't take much to lash summat up that would not affect the integrity of the frame and could then be easily removed.

'Alan' frames were the choice frame for any cross rider 20-30 yrs ago. Multi world champ Albert Zweifel rode them.

I think i'm trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist by the sounds of it. I may just get the planet-x and cover all bases in one go.
Who knows I may hate the first race and never do it again (From the enthuiasm of Kevin and Andy last night I somehow doubt that though) so a bike that can be used on the roads for a 3hour trundle is a must.

In that case, the Uncle John is perfect. Plus you get a training bike that will take guards and bottle cages. Good all-rounder.

Mine arrived and it feels like its made from straight gauge aluminium scaffold pipe! Solid is an understatement, but saying that it looks like it may have to be sent back due to irregular dents in the chainstays...don't think it will affect the structure (and for once I'm not fussed about looks). but better to be safe than sorry.
