I've joined a gym and have been doing some spinning classes and core (cor!) exercises. The spinning classes are bloody hard work, but I dont know how relevant they are to "real" cycling. I hardly ever cycle at 140 rpm in the real world!
Using my hrm, the average and maximum HR was the same as the 4 hour enduro I did. I figure that it's better than the turbo, which I hate and hardly use.
So the question is, spinnning, good or bad? Or better than nothing?

Better than nothing.

Depending on the music you have to listen to it could be a lot worse than nothing.

Certainly better than nothing but don't get sucked into the whole "twiddly bits" that some instructors like to add. Push-ups on the bars, one leg drills, 'hovering' and VERY high cadence can do damage. Just stick to the spinning bit.

Yes the music choice is "interesting" and the disco light section is just weird!
When it comes to the sprint intervals, I just use a higher resistance and spin slower, otherwise I think my legs will unscrew!
I went and used the bikes when there wasn't a class, just did a turbo session and it did the job, although having to watch that orange skinned buffoon that presents some auctioneering programme was odd.
But overall, I think yes, better than nothing.

I'm a regular spinner and would say defo "better than nothing" but it does allow you to a) avoid the weather b) avoid the Turbo ! and it's a good way of augmenting whatever else you're doing to rid yourself of those Xmas inches. However, it certainly doesn't provide the "holier than thou" feeling that a good Turbo sesh gives you !

I can’t quite see the logic of avoiding a turbo session with a spin session, in principle aren’t they pretty much the same or I am missing something here?

I'll hit 140rpm most weeks racing (and still have some 15yr old on restricted gears come past me) How relevant it is to real cycling depends a lot on the instructor. I'd agree that one leg drills on a spin bike are a bit pointless - the whole point is to highlight the dead spots in your pedalling and a great big flywheel will very effectively keep them hidden.

Dan, it's mostly a music issue:
Spinning - "I Like To Move It (Move It)" by "Reel 2 Real"
Turbo - Pretty much anything by Cradle of Filth
Hope that helps.

Well I wish someone had told me that years ago, there I was; on my turbo night after night, sweating like Josef Fritzl at a B&Q “cellar conversion and soundproofing half price bonanza” when I could have been spinning away to "I Like To Move It (Move It)" with stacks of girls.
I’ve been a fool, Horta what days are the spin classes on again?

Yeah, but it's a trigger innit. You say that, but honestly it's such a faff having to put the 'phones on and crank up Reel 2 Real every time you want to attack. And a dead giveaway to the opposition.

No ladeez at my sessions, just hairy legged cyclists and triathletes avoiding the turbo.
Anyone had the front to remove the flat pedals and stick their own pedals on?

Sounds like you got the short straw there; no ladies, but a room full of triathletes, I think I'll stick to the turbo after all.
