As those of you racing last month found out, there are regulations that restrict the gearing on your bike. This not ‘elf ‘n’ safety’ nanny state-ism gone mad; there are some good reasons why these regulations exist- - To make a level playing field for developing riders who would be at a disadvantage against rivals who are bigger, stronger and uglier yet are riding in the same category.
- ought to allow for more bunched riding
- help you develop good cadence
- avoids injury from over work pushing to high a gear
It makes sense to train using the same gearing ratios that you can race on. Sorting you bike is tedious, dull and can be expensive, still it is important that it is done well; most of you racing at Hog Hill were at a disadvantage to those that had their cycles set accurately. To help the club has teamed up with BC Bikes (soon to be Balfe’s Bikes) in East Dulwich. Richard Balfe has offered DP Youth members a fantastic 25% on labour charges (on top of your club discount), and the club will front the first £30 of the work. (he has also promised to maximise the value of the club's £30 grant). The offer is open to any Dulwich Paragon youth rider up to and including Junior category, who is consistently racing. See/contact me or Dave J-B for further details on how to apply. BC Bikes will do the work, the club will pay....well at least help a bit.... Charlie
