With summer fast becoming a distant memory Dave and I have planned a packed program of cycling for Dulwich Paragon Youth members and older HHYCC members (15 plus) in the Autumn and Winter. Our aim is to prepare you to be able to race and succeed in the Youth and Junior road series held in the Spring next year.
We will continue to structure the Saturday rides to this end. Be prepared for some longer base training rides, series of short sharp rides up particularly nasty hills, and those that know Dave and I well, will not be surprised to hear that we want to take the occasional break from the roads and will be organising some longer days mountain biking in Swingley and Deepcut Forests. (Deepcut - the name refers to the the canal cutting and not the injuries I normally inflict on myself when riding there) If you don’t have an MTB can you start to think of how you can beg borrow (possibly not steal) a bike for these sessions- any reasonable entry level bike will do, just ensure the gears and brakes work, the latter being generally more important than the former.
Dulwich Paragon will have use of the Velodrome for one evening a week during the winter, I am hoping that we will be able to run a monthly youth only evening sessions riding road bikes on the track where we will have the opportunity to coach you with some real race tactics and manoeuvres.
Bill and I expect the roller sessions to restart in late October - as soon as we know more I will let you know.
Future events include:
Dulwich World Champs at the Velopark in Gravesend on the 14th September
This is open to members of DP and HHYCC riders 15 years and older. We will ride gently to Gravesend from the Velodrome, have a quick race returning to the Woodhouse on Crystal Palace for a slap up dinner . Please do not wear club kit to race in, if everyone races in the same kit the judges get confused. You need to enter in advance on RiderHQ. There will be trophies, podiums and general hero worship for the winner. (fyi If a HHYCC member wins they will automatically get free membership to Dulwich Paragon for a year )
Dulwich Paragon Hill Climb- date to be agreed but it will on a Saturday in early October. In the past we have incorporated this in to a Saturday ride but I suspect forth coming Saturday rides may include a few toughies .......
London League Cyclo Cross- name says it all, the series starts this Sunday in Brighton and runs through to March.
Gorrick Winter and Spring Series - a splendid series of monthly mountain bike races throughout the the winter, worth riding just to find the best parts of Crowthorne and Deepcut Woods and more.
Saturday Rides - on a weekly basis Dave and I will be leading the youth group for those aged 15+ and coaches from HHYCC will be leading a monthly road ride for those aged 12 and over.
Details of the these will be in my periodic e-mails to you, in the HHYCC newsletter, Dulwich club calendar and the DP forum.
If any parent/rider is interested in helping in this incredibly rewarding part of the club can you please let me know- in particular I am looking for riders to help with guiding a regular ride for members of both DP and HHYCC aged 12 plus.
Look forward to seeing you on bikes in the near future
Charlie
