Nah, Deer's Leap for me that day. I'll be back next year.

Just noticed that i seem to have got my place along with usual suspect, Mr Cleverly, and debutante paragon, Mr D Switzer. Let the brutal training begin...
What we need now are wise words from coach Mckibben...

Yes indeed. Wise words, such as ´What the hell do you think you are doing, you stupid man?'
Note I have enlisted Simon 'Northern name, Southern Jessie' Scarsbrook and Guy 'straights or drops?` Andrews into my team of old men. We mean business.

Hmmm, building for the future with that squad, then.
Did South Downs Way yesterday - which I think is the hardest ride I've ever done, not helped by the fact it rained most of the way. Relative to that the 3 peaks should feel like a relief (but i know it won't). It must be doing me some good... maybe.

Ha, yes. No country for old men, Yorkshire.
SDW is great riding. Which bit did you do? I would be game to do some more of that over the next few weeks.

Did the bit between Winchester and Eastbourne, plus about 20 miles to and from stations at either end. And it bloody rained.
Keen to do some more, though Kent is a little more convenient. Let me know.

Starting to think about getting my cross bike in a state to cope with both the 3 Peaks and this year's cross races (as I now live in Kendal I'm presuming I'll be DP's sole rep in the NW league).
Can anyone recommend a good set of tyres for the 3 Peaks? I've read that quite a few people use SCHWALBE Land Cruisers - are these any good.?
Also the insert brake pads I used last year seemed to wear out really quickly - any suggestions of durable ones but with decent stopping power?
cheers

There is no alternative to Lancruisers. Many have tried and failed. They weigh a ton but you will not puncture, which is worth it. Ordinary cross tyres with pliable side walls are liable to blow when you hit the slabs.
Not sure about pads. I went through a set on my first Peaks and almost ran over the commentator on the final bend, but it was raining. Since then, I have braked less.

Hey switz, go and have a chat with the guys go wheelbase. They should be able to give some pretty good advice having had their team rider win it for the last umpteen years.

Bloody Hell - that hurt. Simon's Fell on Ingleton was a beast at the start - my calves have never known such pain. www.flickr.com/photos/eddieallenbc/3961514057/in/photostream/And on the last road section I looked up and saw a distant mountain and thought "surely that can't be Pen-Y-Gent?" Oh, but it was, and there was Rob Jebb at the bottom clapping away having finished and changed already. Anyway, 4.31 for first attempt and already thinking of next year.....

Great ride david. That sounds like a pretty good time tbh. Did you escape mechanicals? Hey ricardo, you're being remarkably quiet, what happened? Pb?

David did well, but it was a disaster for me.
I woke up feeling cold and shaky and could hardly manage the 3 mile ride to the start. The 'neutralised' start was the usual full blooded thrash to the bottom of Ingleborough. I normallly do well on this section but I went backwards this time. I reckon i lost 300 places. I got to the first climb and i was sick.
Staggered up Ingleborough and hammered it down the other side. Was sick again on the next road section. I couldn't hold anyone's wheel and couldn't even turn my 34x29 lowest on the flat. I got to the turning for the Whernside climb and decided to pack.
The nice marshall gave me the keys to her car so i could sit in it and get warm, then she drove me back to Horton, where we were staying. It was a good job she did because i was shivering and had no idea how i was going to get back.
I was so disappointed. I've no idea what did me - it was just as though someone had turned off the power. An horrible feeling.
Next year....
What happened at Deer's Leap?

Well done David and Ian, great rides!
Sorry to hear about your woes 'Rick', we were wondering what had happened as you were down as getting over the first climb and then nothing! Do you think it was food poisoning or a virus? Guess this means it's a full season of cross then?!
