Just found out the route the giro takes next may, amazingly it's all within a short drive from Chamonix. There's a stage finish at La Thuile which will be a tough uphill finish and the next stage sets off from Aosta and heads into Switzerland past Martigny, which is cyclable from Chamonix! These stages are on the 20th and 21st of May.
If anyone's interested in coming out to Chamonix for a weeks cycling and watching the Giro I should be able to organise it for us to stay in the our Chalet for a week at cost price. It sleeps 10 altogether, Julene and I will definitely be staying out to watch it so there'll be 8 spaces left. Geneva's the nearest airport and is an hours drive from Chamonix, with minibus transfers easily arranged. The weather last May in Chamonix was sunny and hot with temperatures in the mid twenties . If any one is interested let me know and I'll find out exactly what the costs will be.

Sounds like it could be a great trip. I did have some vague idea of trying to get out to do the Nove Colli around May time - but maybe this would be more fun.

There's an image button in the reply window – or type the code [/img] Somebody posted the URLs at Cycling Plus. I suspect the top one is merely a linking footpath between parts of the dirt road that goes to the ski station finish. Not sure about the lower one; looks bad, but if you remember that camera shots looking down gradients make them look horizontal, and that the part of the corner about a metre in front of the walker is probably the real flat point, then it's probably "only" a 25% gradient.

We've provisonally booked the week from Saturday 20th May to Saturday 27th May. The La Thuile stage is on the 20th but it'll be ok for everyone to arrive on Friday or Thursday as the previous week it's empty but is for end of season cleaning. The cost is £650 so split between 10 it's £65, between 8 it's £80 each. Currently we have the following expressing an interest.
Karen Rich David Oscar Bob Jeff James Anne

For those that haven't already heard, the Giro will be a good chance to see Ullrich, I've copied this from Eurosports website:
I won't be riding the Giro to try and win outright, but as preparation for the Tour de France", Ullrich told Austrian journalists in Vienna. "But if I have the legs, I will show myself on one or two stages."
The 1997 Tour de France winner spoke as he trained with T-Mobile's newest riders in the Austrian Alps.
Ullrich, who in the past has battled weight problems in the early season, got back on the bike earlier this month - which is sooner than in previous years.
On November 28th, Ullrich and six team-mates fly out to South Africa for a three week training camp followed by the official T-Mobile Team training camp in Majorca.
"I will start racing in March", Ullrich told T-Mobile's official website.

I'm happy to take a carload; having the car may help get more varied rides in during the week. My only constraint is needing to be back in time for the Brixton Track meeting, 29th May (Monday, bank Holiday).
Are there any cyclo-sportives on in northern Italy, south-west France that are reachable the same week?

A little update on the trip. We have the possibility larger chalet for the trip. It's a nicer chalet right in the center of Chamonix capable of accomodating 13 of us. It's got a fantastic garden and balcony plus a garage for all of the bikes. We lived there last winter and know it's a good place. It would be a little more expensive £1050 for the chalet so if we fill it comes to about £80 each. Being right in the middle of Chamonix makes it good for bars and restaurants. If we can book this one instead what's the general opinion? We'll need 11 of you guys plus myself andf Julene.
